The left-hand phenomenon has persisted for generations. “QWERTY“ refers generally to the first six letter keys on a standard English keyboard, intentionally arranged from left to right.
The use of the left hand to do practically anything has, for ages, been considered very odd, instantly dismissible, negative, disrespectful, and insulting. I will never forget what befell me from my father the first day I used my left hand to give him his own dress. He didn't spare me, even during the nightly prayers.
Having started my early education on Olympic and Remington QWERTY typewriters, I became curious about the phenomenon surrounding Left & Right keyboard typing speed, tech hardware designs, or social interactions. If you want to go viral, or explode on social media, just shake someone’s hand using your left hand!
In many respects, the world is designed to favour right-handed people, almost 90% of the population. The right hand is the default assumption of most designs.
In many nations of the world, the left hand is almost a taboo that must be avoided at all costs. It’s like the left hand should never have existed as part of our body.
It’s like no left-handed person will ever become a Tailor, looking at how most scissors are designed. Also, school desks, carpentry, and kitchen tools design are biased toward right-handed.
Left-handed people are known for complex reasoning, multitasking, and being brilliant. Since 90% of designs work against how their brains are wired, they are forced to work harder, learn harder, adapt harder, and process ideas faster.
The result is that, in the history of the world, we have a high number of notable lefties winning the famous Nobel Prizes in literature, science, architecture, music, arts, and mathematics.
The great philosopher Aristotle and most British Royals are left-handed, including Queen Elizabeth II; Ronald Reagan, Ford, WH Bush, Clinton, and Obama. Also in the despised lefties club are Oprah Winfrey, Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Diego Maradona, Lady Gaga, Nigeria’s President Obasanjo and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, etc.
Greatness doesn't always arrive looking great. Sometimes it arrives disguised as weakness, limitation, or rejection.
On QWERTY keyboards, the left hand types more words faster than the right. To be precise, the despised left-hand of today is tomorrow's instant right-hand celebration. The person you consider too weak, too slow, or “not good enough” may eventually become the very person you will soon look up to.
